1106 Design differs from other book design firms because we started out as a typography shop.

From 1980 to 1993, we did business in Phoenix as Pro-Type and grew to be one of the top typography shops in the city. We learned our craft before the invention of desktop publishing, and we still attend to the “old-fashioned” standards of book composition so often ignored today, even by mainstream publishers.

So, why is that long-ago experience meaningful to you? It wasn’t unusual in the “good old days” for clients to drop off an annual report (filled with complex financial tables and graphs) for typesetting and proofreading at 5 p.m. and expect it back at 8 a.m. the next morning (and heaven help us if it wasn’t absolutely perfect). With deadlines like that every day, the only way to survive was to hire people who produced quality work, not because it was required of them, but because they found it satisfying…no, necessary…to deliver quality work for its own sake. We still work that way today, and our Team of Ten knows how to deliver top quality design and production with our most important service of all, hand holding.
