Book Cover Design

After the title captures their interest, buyers glance at your book cover for only a few seconds before making up their minds to buy (or not). Great book covers don’t just happen.

Contrary to popular belief, the cover design process takes between 10 and 30 hours, including time to research other books in your genre, discuss your target market, locate the right images and pair them with the right fonts. It takes time to collaborate with you on variations until the cover design sings. Then, it takes time to prepare the digital file properly, so that what you see is what you’ll get from the printer.

This is not the time to hunt for bargains…unless you thrive on high risk. In book design, just as in any other area, too-good-to-be-true prices usually are. You’ll get exactly the level of service that you pay for. So give your book the best possible chance to sell by first giving it the highest level of professional design available. Working with 1106 Design assures you of quality results, and an enjoyable process, instead of disappointment. We offer three levels of cover design service to suit nearly any budget.

Level 1: Cover design with “Best Seller” marketing consultation

When you set out on a journey, it helps to have a destination in mind… and a map. Our researcher will review your manuscript to find similar bestselling books and create a list of titles in your genre.
The buying public has been trained to pick up books that have a certain “look.” By staying current with the popular and bestselling books in your genre, we can help you create a focused, marketable cover that lends instant credibility to your book with it’s “just like all the other bestsellers” cover.
This research process takes several hours. Once complete, a 90–minute phone and web session is booked with the author/publisher and using the web, we review our research and collaborate on an appropriate cover concept. Our process includes finding a visual example of every concept we come up with. At the completion of this session, you will have a fully executable cover concept (a road map) for the design process to follow. Then, we’ll provide:
—Three front cover designs for you to choose from, using royalty-free images from our sources that best convey the results of the research above, custom typography, digital image blending and manipulation as needed, and color selection to bring out the best in the images.
— Production of front cover, back cover and spine and a free bar code.
— Up to three hours of time for revisions is included.

Level 4: Cover Production

— One front cover concept will be rendered using one hi-resolution digital image you purchase and provide (or you may send us one image number from iStockPhoto.com). Price includes custom typography, digital image manipulation, and color selection.
— Production of front cover, back cover and spine and a free bar code.
— Up to one hour of  time for revisions is included.

A word about cover concepts: Please note above that when we say we will show you three cover concepts, we mean we will give you three different concepts to choose from. This is different from the method some other designers follow, which is to give you one concept at a time, revising from there based on your feedback. In our view, three concepts up front gives  you three clear directions from which to choose, while one concept to start gives you only one direction, modified by your preferences.

(Covers that require custom illustration are also available and can be quoted after a discussion of your particular requirements. If you plan to hire your own illustrator, please allow your cover designer and illustrator to communicate with each other before illustration begins for best results.)
