As a book publishing coach, one of the biggest mistakes I see authors make--especially first-time authors who are self publishing--is to try to design the cover themselves, or force the designer to use their concept too slavishly. I especially agree with allowing the designer to come up with a great concept, and not be willing to just go with some template. The covers I&#039;ve seen authors come up with themselves have been atrocious, unless they work WITH a designer in the way you mention.
