Is 2018 the year you publish your book? Or perhaps you launched in 2017 and are now in book marketing mode.
Either way, here are seven New Year’s Resolutions to guide you on your path.
1. Be paid 100% of my royalties.
Fortunately for indie publishers, this is easy to do. While authors working with publishing service-based companies like 1106 Design have always earned 100 percent of their compensation by dealing directly with the print-on-demand (POD), sales and distribution of their books, thousands of other authors knowingly or unknowingly trade off a percentage of their compensation to self-publishing companies. Authors are now starting to understand what they are giving up and are learning how simple it can be to open one’s own accounts with IngramSpark or CreateSpace and earn the highest possible revenue.
2. Join a writer’s group.
Writers who belong to writers’ groups have reported good success. Group members hold each other to account, offer feedback, share resources, and provide a social gathering—a community—to combat the isolation that can come with being a writer. The downside however is that groups can also be hyper-critical and if there is too much negativity expressed during feedback, members can become discouraged from continuing their writing. So just filter the criticism and enjoy the rest of what the group can bring to your writing.
3. Show up.
Marketing your book means you will have to come out of your shell and put yourself out there. On social media, for book signings, interviews, and reviews…you have to “show up,” which means bringing your full authentic self to the effort. You can do it!
4. Get involved with an indie bookstore.
Indie bookstores are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. As people are beginning to rebel against the digital experience and desire ways to reconnect with actual humans, the idea of the local community bookstore is gaining traction. By getting involved, you can offer to do a lecture, a book reading and signing, teach a class, and in return, get your book on their shelves!
5. Record an audio book.
The popularity of audio books continues to grow. In fact, they are the fastest growing sector of the publishing industry, which make sense as people are increasingly plugged into their listening devices. If you have a great voice and professional recording equipment, recording the book might be something you can do yourself. However, as with all indie publishing efforts, we recommend you hire a professional for best results.
6. Hire a professional book designer.
Of course we would manage a way to fit this resolution in! It’s one resolution that never goes out of date, and in fact, given the extreme competitiveness in the book marketing space, standing out from the competition is more important than ever. Rather than figuring out how to create a book cover that compels people to buy your book and a book interior that compels them to read it, invest in a professional designer to do the work. Spend the time you’ve just saved in building your author platform on social media.
7. Help another indie publisher.
If you’ve completed the self-publishing journey, you’ve learned enough to write a book about it! (OK, perhaps not; at least, not right away.) Consider sharing what you’ve learned with others who are just starting out. Do you remember feeling alone and not knowing what to do next?
