Author Story: Samuel Halpern

In Wellsprings of Work, Samuel Halpern examines how people can find meaning and motivation in their careers. As he neared retirement, Halpern increasingly mentored younger colleagues, and in doing so, he couldn’t help but wonder what all his hard work had amounted to. What had driven him all those years, and what could inspire those he mentored in their own careers? He gradually realized that he had strong but unarticulated views on what provides meaning and motivation in work and thus felt compelled to examine and express those views. Halpern used his experiences over an almost 50-year-long career in law and investments as catalysts for exploring larger ideas about purpose and value across a wide range of fields. Wellsprings of Work was his way of clarifying his views in his own mind and sharing them with others.

The Toll of Writing…

Writing and publishing the book was a deeply personal experience for Halpern, as he had to examine and ultimately reveal his feelings toward his career, exploring its emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. As he wrote in the “Acknowledgements” section of his work, “…writing a heartfelt book is a labor of love. It’s also a labor of uncertainty: ‘putting yourself out there’ while unsure whether what you’ve got to say is worth saying and, if so, whether you’ve said it well.” Though Halpern splendidly overcame the struggles inherent in writing such a work, he didn’t have to carry out the rest of his publishing journey alone, not after turning to 1106 Design.

Closing Thoughts…

We were more than happy to help Halpern achieve his publishing goals. We helped him with book cover design, typesetting, and refining his subtitle, and we provided him with a detailed editorial review and a customized layout. Whenever he had a concern, we were right there to address it. All stages of self-publishing require great attention to detail, and the process is not for the faint of heart. However, you don’t have to shoulder all of the burden. The right team will stick with you every step of the way and make the process as painless as possible. That’s what 1106 Design is here for. Halpern is “proud and pleased” with the result of all the hard work he and the team at 1106 Design put into his project. We’re confident you will be, too.

If you have a message you’d like to share with the world, we’d love to talk with you about it and see how we can best help you accomplish your goals.
