Editorial Services

Editing ensures that your self-published book meets professional standards. You don’t want your book to “look” self-published, and you don’t want it to “sound” self-published either!

An editorial evaluation at the start will eliminate any doubt you might have about whether your book is “good enough.” The evaluation will provide you with some preliminary feedback on your manuscript from a professional editor.

1106 Design’s editing services include editorial evaluation, copyediting, substantive or developmental editing, proofreading and indexing.

Eliminate Worry with an Editorial Evaluation

Get a professional editor’s eye on your book without committing to a full edit. The editor will review the first 75 pages of your manuscript and comment on the quality of the research, writing, overall clarity, and potential level of market interest. Then we’ll summarize the services needed to improve the manuscript and/or your book’s eventual marketability. You have nothing to lose. If you subsequently hire us to edit your book, this fee will be applied to the cost of editing.

Copyediting

If you want your book to meet professional publishing standards and be as good as it can be, copyediting by an experienced book editor is essential. Copyediting corrects grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. Our experienced editors will ensure your book meets professional publishing standards by correcting problems in logical flow, consistency, redundancy and factual content and make suggestions to help you correct these issues and more. A second set of eyes is invaluable!

Price is subject to a review of the manuscript and includes one pass of editing. Sometimes additional passes between editor and author are required to bring the manuscript up to professional publishing standards. If so, we will obtain your written permission to proceed at $80/hour.

Substantive Editing

In addition to the areas addressed by copyediting, a substantive edit considers a manuscript’s intended audience and focuses on its structure and logical flow. Using a more intensive and hands-on approach than copyediting, the professional editor may reword unclear and awkward writing to improve clarity and the flow of ideas, restructure portions of the manuscript, and eliminate redundancy.

This price is subject to a review of the manuscript and includes one pass for substantive editing and, after the author implements the suggested changes, one pass of copyediting. Sometimes additional passes between editor and author are required at each stage to bring the manuscript up to professional publishing standards. If so, we will obtain your written permission to proceed at $80/hour.

Proofreading

To ensure maximum quality, complete proofreading of your layout AFTER typesetting is the standard procedure in publishing. You’ll be amazed at the errors our proofreaders find, even in the most carefully edited manuscripts! This service is included with our interior book layout service, but is available “á la carte” as a separate service.

Our proofreading service includes the following:

  • We’ll mark items using The Chicago Manual of Style or your own style sheet as a guide.
  • We’ll send you a marked-up PDF for review of our findings and addition of your own changes.

Index

The index is an alphabetical listing of key terms that includes the page numbers where those terms can be found in your book. An index makes your book more accessible for your readers. Customers, book store purchasers and acquisition librarians often turn to the index first when deciding whether or not to buy a book.

Indexing Level 1

Our indexer will read every word of your book, apply critical thinking skills, and include cross-references and multiple entries that make the entire text of the book easily accessible to your reader.

Front matter, back matter, glossaries, references, and bibliographies are not typically indexed.

Indexing Level 2

Our indexer will work from your list of terms to compile the index, judging which instances of each term should and should not be listed.

Front matter, back matter, glossaries, references, and bibliographies are not typically indexed.
