Self-publishing takes a lot of planning, and one of the first planning steps is to create a budget for editing and proofing, cover design, page design and layout, printing, a website, marketing and more. Once you’ve got a budget, you can think about how you’re going to pay to self-publish your book. Crowdfunding is a popular option, one that many authors have good success with IF they do the work necessary to create a good campaign.

We think that the Kickstarter campaign created by 1106 Design author Eleanor Scully Gilvarry to publish her children’s book Why Do I Love You, is an excellent example of a crowdfunding campaign. She has posted a professional video (essential for most crowdfunding sites), and has written compelling text to let people know her story and why the book is important and worthy of funding. Eleanor has also offered many manageable pledges for contributors, from 2 euros (approximately $2.20) up to 180 euros (approximately $197) and more. Each pledge level has an attractive offer. For example, people who pledge 2 euros will receive exclusive updates from the author, while those who pledge 14 euros receive the eBook version plus all the gifts from the preceding levels (the update, a coloring book, poster). As this is a Kickstarter campaign, Eleanor will only receive funding if she meets her goal. Click here to view Eleanor’s Kickstarter campaign page.
