So many authors ask us about the value of publishing in multiple formats vs. just one or two. Often the debate is between eBooks and print books in general, as more and more people think print books are going by the wayside. Some people are so bent on the print vs. digital debate that they completely overlook the fastest-growing publishing format: audiobook.

Let’s take a look at why it’s a good idea to consider multiple formats.

Why Publishing Multiple Formats Is Helpful

It may cost more upfront to publish a variety of formats, but in the long run, it can increase your chances of reaping a higher ROI. Consumers don’t just focus on one corner of the market. They buy different formats for different reasons.

Each format has numerous advantages, and publishing multiple formats gives you the opportunity to cater to a wider array of customers and makes you more versatile in the marketplace. You might prefer a specific format, but if you want to make a profit, you need to think about what your customers want.

Which Format Is Best?

If you only have the ability to publish one format, you may be wondering which is the best investment. That depends on your goals, your audience, and your budget.

All formats have their pros and cons:

  • Though easier to pirate than other formats, eBooks are generally cheaper and more portable.
  • Audiobooks are expensive, but they can offer a uniquely immersive experience and allow those with busy schedules to enjoy books without putting off other activities.
  • Print books provide a more tactile experience and come with many publishing/purchasing options, such as different binding styles and trim sizes.
