Why Authors Need Websites

Let’s say you’re looking for a new dentist. You Google the two names your friend gave you. The first dentist has a very professional and informative website complete with customer testimonials, which for the most part are positive. You head over to their Facebook page, where they post helpful information and patient comments, and read their Google reviews, which are quite positive. This dentist looks good! For comparison’s sake, you search the other dentist’s name—no website; just a listing on yellowpages.com. No online reviews either. Finding out more about this dentist will take some work and you don’t have time, and you pick up the phone to make an appointment with dentist #1.

Can you really compare dentists to authors? When it comes to websites: yes.

Just like the website legitimized the first dentist, an author website legitimizes your book. Without a website, your potential readers won’t find much information about your book or you—the author—and may have a hard time taking your book seriously as a result.

Yes, you’ll have an Amazon page, but there’s nothing on it that sets you apart besides the images of your (hopefully, amazing) book cover and interior pages, and the customer reviews. Whereas every Amazon page looks similar and provides limited information, your website includes so much more and lets your unique personality shine through. Photos, a video trailer, and a blog of your experience writing the book are just a few ideas. All serve to build anticipation in advance of publication and let your audience get to know you.

Through your website, inform readers about book signings and other appearances. Include links to online book reviews and interviews, publish reader reviews, and provide discussion group questions. Your website gives you another forum to sell your book; an eCommerce page can be added easily for this and future books.

We call these “author websites” because the focus is on you and your most current book. Readers who enjoyed your first book will check back for future publications. All your books should be on one website, preferably using your name as the url. Use social media (e.g., Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter) to build community and keep readers informed of your activities and new books.

Still uncertain? Look at the websites of your favorite authors. Just as you would review bestselling books for guidance on cover design, the websites of bestselling authors will give you some inspiration for your own.
